Around the World in Trams: Vevey-Montreux-Chillon 4

For the next few weeks “Around the World in Trams” is going inside as we take a look at some of the exhibits located in the Lucerne Transport Museum, Switzerland.

The transport museum in Lucerne is the Swiss Museum of Transport (Verkershaus der Schweiz) and as well as trams holds collections of rail, car, aviation, space and much more. Opened in July 1959 it is the most popular museum in Switzerland.

The first tram exhibit which we take a look at is no. 4 – with the photo taken on 14th August 2009. Built in 1888 this tram operated on the Vevey-Montreux-Chillon line using an early electrification method which saw twin overhead copper tubes with the current collected by a trolley running on these tubes and pulled by the tram.  The tramway closed in 1958 at which point no. 4 was transferred to the transport museum where it remains on display to this day.
