In Pictures: Road-Rail Works Vehicle out on the Blackpool Tramway

The Blackpool Tramway has always had a varied works car fleet. In the earlier days of the tramway many of the works fleet were converted withdrawn passenger trams but as technology has developed there has been a bigger reliance on purpose built vehicles – several of which have been road-rail vehicles allowing them (surprisingly enough) to run on both the road and rails. We’ve regularly seen some of the fleet numbered Unimogs of these pages but one vehicle which hasn’t featured a great deal is the unnumbered vehicle with the registration number MX14 LRJ.

Major doubts that horse trams will run on Isle of Man in 2022

Just when you thought the ongoing saga of the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway had taken as many twists and turns as is possible then another comes along. It now looks as if 2022 will be another year without any service after the Minister in charge of the Department of Infrastructure told Tynwald he was not hopeful of them running this year – and that’s just on the shortened line which had been expected to see operation in time for the main summer season.

In Pictures: Signalling problems sees Tram-Train services diverted to Meadowhall

Network Rail signalling problems around Rotherham on Monday 25th April meant the Stagecoach Supertram operated Tram-Train service to Rotherham Parkgate was disrupted. As is often the case when it isn’t possible to access the line via the Tinsley Chord the Tram-Train service was diverted to Meadowhall – with the destination displays on the Citylink vehicles displaying the service as being on the Yellow route.

As we reported a little while back the 2022 season on the Volk’s Electric Railway got underway on Monday 11th April (it was unable to start the preceding weekend due to the Brighton Marathon) with former BBC newsreader Nicholas Owen doing the official reopening. Services are currently only able to operate between Aquarium and Halfway with the section through to Black Rock closed due to council works on the foreshore which is seeing new crossings installed. Its hoped that a full service may resume at the end of May or start of June. This pictorial update from Tony Sullivan shows services running on Friday 22nd April.

New interpretation for remains of Birmingham 107

The only tram at the Aldridge Transport Museum – formerly the Aston Manor Road Transport Museum – has recently received some new interpretation to give visitors to the museum a better idea of what the tram would have looked like. Bluebird runs under its own power!

As milestones in the restoration of a tram go they don’t get much more significant than the first runs under its own power – and that is exactly what happened for Bluebird at the Crich Tramway Village on Friday 22nd April. London County Council 1 has been under restoration since June 2014 and with work progressing well it has now reached the stage where it can be shunted without the need for something else to provide the power.

In Pictures: Glasgow 585 at the Science Museum store

Whilst there are many Glasgow trams which have been preserved there is probably one which has proved to be elusive to most – Glasgow 585. Owned by the Science Museum the tram used to be on display at the Kensington based museum (until the late 1990s) but has more recently been kept in their off-site storage in Wiltshire. With no public access to the Wroughton store for some time the tram has remained out of sight but when volunteers from the Ipswich Transport Museum went to collect an Ipswich trolleybus which was being transferred east they couldn’t resist the chance to record the Standard car in photographic form.
