In Pictures: Enter the open top tram at Crich!

Sunday 10th July saw the much anticipated entry into service of an open top tram at the Crich Tramway Village with Blackpool Boat 236 being used as part of a three car service at the Roaring 20s event. This was the first open top tram to be used at Crich in 2022 and comes just over a week after the resumption of services following the replacement of corroded overhead poles in the depot yard.

Tramlink strike timetable confirmed

The second – of two announced strikes so far – 48 hour strike on London Tramlink will be taking place on Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th July. As with the previous strike last month there will be a very limited service in operation, mainly concentrated on the Wimbledon line.

New Metro train simulator installed in South Shields

Drivers on the Tyne and Wear Metro are set to prepare for the new trains due to be introduced on the network from next year by using a new state of the art simulator which has recently been installed at the Nexus Learning Centre in South Shields. The simulator has been provided by train builders Stadler and it uses CGI to give a realistic and interactive train driving experience.

Get your 2023 diaries out for special events on the Isle of Man!

We may not have even got as far as the Summer Transport Festival on the Isle of Man (27th to 31st July in case you need reminding) but attention is already turning to 2023 when the Summer Festival will be lengthened to a full week and there will also be an additional event in September as the island celebrates the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Douglas to Peel railway line and the 130th anniversary of the Manx Electric Railway.

Edinburgh Trams are to donate dozens of squeezy tram toys to help make the Edinburgh Fringe Festival a stress-free experience for autistic festival goers. Special sensory backpacks will be put together by the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society with the squeezy trams set to be a major part of these!

Driver to face trial over Sandilands accident

Alfred Dorris, aged 48 from Beckenham, is to stand trial at either the Old Bailey or Southwark Crown Court after he pleaded not guilty to breaking health and safety laws during the London Tramlink accident on 9th November 2016. The accident saw a tram leave the rails after it was overspeeding when taking the curve on the approach to Sandilands and tragically saw seven people lose their lives.

LRSSB release three year business plan

The Light Rail Safety and Standards Board have released a new three year business plan following the confirmation of £3.3 million worth of funding from the Department for Transport. This gives the organisation – who are responsible for driving light rail safety across the country – a clear vision for the future.

In Picture: Testing to Edgbaston Village continues

As mentioned earlier this week testing/driver familiarisation is now underway on the West Midlands Metro extension to Edgbaston Village ahead of a start of public services at some point in the near future (and hoped to be before the Commonwealth Games get underway on 28th July). One tram a day is being used for these tests with the tram being used to run between Library and Edgbaston Village on several occasions.

Tram Sunday is back and Heritage Tram Tours will come to the party!

After an absence of two years Fleetwood Tram Sunday – or the Fleetwood Transport Festival if you prefer – is back on Sunday 17th July and although the event has evolved a lot since that first one back in 1985, Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours will be putting the tram into the event with static displays as well as special tours both on the day and the day before for those who want to make a weekend of it.

Rail replacement work coming to NET from end of July

As had become traditional during the summer school holidays there will be rail replacement works taking place on Nottingham Express Transit which will lead to part of the network being closed and replacement buses put on. The work this time will centre around Hyson Green Market and will be taking place between Wednesday 27th July and Sunday 7th August.
