Driver to face trial over Sandilands accident

Alfred Dorris, aged 48 from Beckenham, is to stand trial at either the Old Bailey or Southwark Crown Court after he pleaded not guilty to breaking health and safety laws during the London Tramlink accident on 9th November 2016. The accident saw a tram leave the rails after it was overspeeding when taking the curve on the approach to Sandilands and tragically saw seven people lose their lives.

Mr Dorris is accused of failing as an employee to take reasonable care of passengers and entered his not guilty plea at Croydon Crown Court. He has now been released on unconditional bail with Mr Justice Fraser applying to transfer the case to either the Old Bailey or Southwark Crown Court. No date has yet been set for the trial.

The charges have been brought by the Office for Road and Rail. Both Transport for London and Tram Operations Limited had previously pleaded guilty to health and safety charges at a previous hearing.
