In Pictures: Tram makes it to Wolverhampton Railway Station!

This is not a drill! And it is not 1st April! The first tram has finally reached Wolverhampton Railway Station as the testing and commissioning period of the West Midlands Metro extension gets underway. The nocturnal movement saw 43 travel along the entire length of the line in the early hours of Tuesday 4th April with the tram becoming the first on this short extension which is due to open this June.

Whitley Bay Metro station reopens

Tyne and Wear Metro services are again calling at Whitley Bay after the completion of emergency repairs to the canopy. The station had been closed since 17th February after damage to the grade II listed canopy caused by Storm Otto.

New NET fares confirmed

As reported in mid-March, fares on Nottingham Express Transit are to change from Monday 3rd April 2023. As usual when an operator says there will be a fare change that generally means they will be increasing and while some fares will remain the same the most popular day fares will be going up from this date.

More Metro woes after overhead comes down

Edinburgh Trams fully recruited ahead of services starting to Newhaven

Its all systems go for trams to run to Newhaven after Edinburgh Trams confirmed that they have fully recruited additional staff to allow the service to be smoothly operated. 80 new staff members have been appointed thanks to the “Glide to the Future” recruitment campaign (which included adverts on tram 258) and they have undergone training in preparation for their new roles.

Midland Metro Alliance launch design and construction competition for student with special educational needs

The Midland Metro Alliance, on behalf for Transport for West Midlands, has written to all Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) and Alternative Provision (AP) schools in Birmingham and the Black Country with details of a new competition which is asking young people to design and build a bug hotel or to share their designs for a tram stop. The competition will run throughout the spring.

One Blackpool Boat Car for sale!

News has reached us that one of the Blackpool Open Boat Cars which resides in the United States of America is up for sale. 226 which currently calls the Western Railway Museum home has been deemed surplus to requirements and is looking for a new home – but it won’t be cheap as they are looking for $50,000 for the tram.

In Pictures: Another tram heads to Dudley and testing of new trams continues

In the dead of the night as all is calm and most people are resting for the next day ahead there are often key movements taking place on the West Midlands Metro with lorries coming to bring and remove trams whilst other trams go about testing ahead of their entry into service. The night of Friday 24th and Saturday 25th March was one such night when Allely’s were back in town to take another tram to Dudley for bodyside repairs whilst one of the latest Urbos100 trams was out on test.

South Yorkshire Mayor recommends tram fare cap scheme is extended

Oliver Coppard, South Yorkshire Mayor, has recommended that the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority continues to fund a £2 fare cap on the Supertram network until the end of June. Unlike the similar scheme on buses nationwide, which is funded by central government, funding for the fare cap on the trams is funded by the authority so it will be discussed further at a forthcoming meeting.

Reporting system roll out aims to enhance tram safety

A new and enhanced accident and incident reporting system has been welcomed by light rail leaders and is now ready to help boost tramway safety across the country. Senior executives from all UK networks heard at a pre-launch event in Birmingham that the Tram Accident and Incident Reporting System (TAIR) had reached an important milestone.
