Restoration of Whitley Bay Metro Station enters next phase

A £5.3 million project restoring the historic canopy at Whitley Bay Metro Station is entering a new phase as work moves on to focus on the atrium at the front of the building. This comes as some scaffolding starts to come down allowing passengers using the station on a daily basis the chance to see the restored canopy for the first time.

NET strikes suspended

Tram services in the lead up to Christmas in Nottingham look set to run as normal following news that the GMB Union have voted to suspend planned industrial action. The action had initially been planned after a Union rep was suspended.

Big Heritage update confirms MTPS trams to leave the Wirral

In news which had previously been released to members of both the Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society (MTPS) and the Tramway Museum Society (TMS), the latest public update from new custodians of the Wirral Transport Museum and Heritage Tramway has confirmed that trams owned by the MTPS are to depart from Taylor Street and head to the Crich Tramway Village.

15 back into service as 10 dominates the October mileage charts at Seaton

Having missed much of the summer season at the Seaton Tramway undergoing maintenance, 15 has returned to service during the month of October. It was one of 11 trams to be used in service over the course of the month with 10 again leading the mileage charts.

Optimism a new train will run on the Metro this year

Its often been mentioned in press releases and the like that the first of the new trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro is due to enter service by the end of 2024 (well, that’s been the case for a while since the introduction was delayed from last year) and now it appears that is edging closer to being the case, according to a report on Newcastle Chronicle website.

In Pictures: A look at Birmingham’s Eastside extension – Part 1

There are currently two major extension projects on UK tramways and they are both on the West Midlands Metro. Having recently paid a visit to see progress on the line out to Dudley (now to be known as the Black Country line) this time we go onto the Eastside line which will end up being a two phase extension as well due to the delays caused by HS2 construction. Ken Jones is our guide for these photos and in this first part we take a look at the route at the far end in Digbeth.

In Pictures: Trams run in the dark at Crich

There’s always something a little bit special about preserved trams running after dark (probably because it doesn’t happen that often) and that was the case over the weekend of Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th November at the Crich Tramway Village. This saw an extra special event take place – “A Journey Through Time and Light” – which for many included the highlight of trams running in the dark. Steven Hughes was there on Saturday 9th November and has shared a selection of images with us.

Next phase of West Midlands Metro expansion set to be given go-ahead

During the recent budget, Chancellor Rachel Reeves called out the Brierley Hill West Midlands Metro as one of the schemes which would benefit from the confirmation of funding and whilst, at the time, there was no specific word from the region that this would definitely be happening that has now come with the decision to be green lit at a meeting later this month. However, its not quite the full originally proposed line that is funded with the final section to Brierley Hill still requiring a further business case.
