In Pictures: More photos from Black Country line construction

The countdown to the opening of the West Midlands Metro Black Country line extension really does seem as if its on as excellent progress is now being made on various points of phase one. Latest LRSSB guidance released on tram-train design and operation

The Light Rail Safety and Standards Board (LRSSB) have recently released a guidance document which sets out the key principles for the safe integration of tram-train systems in the UK. This is the latest guidance released by the organisation who aim to improve the safety of light rail systems across the country.

Metro performance edges up again

Having reached the lows of 65% of trains being on time in the last four weeks of 2024, there is some better news to report on the Tyne and Wear Metro as the performance stats have improved in the first four full weeks of 2025.

In Pictures: Inside and Out of the new Metro trains

Back on 19th December 2024 the first of 46 new trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro entered service when 555 021 carried passengers for the first time. Luas launch new “We love it when you…” campaign

Dublin’s extensive Luas network has continued to show its popularity and importance as part of the transport network in the Irish capital city but like many other transport networks around the world that has come with the risk of anti-social behaviour. The network has now launched a new “We love it when you” campaign which asks people to be considerate of others when travelling on the trams.

West Midlands Metro Urbos3s back at Dudley for repairs

In mid-January 2025 we reported that two West Midlands Metro trams had departed from Wednesbury Depot and as all recent moves had been to Worksop we made an assumption that’s where 34 and 36 had ended up (especially as they had both been there before). But that was a wrong assumption as the two trams have actually gone to the Very Light Rail Innovation Centre in Dudley where they seem to be undergoing repairs.

In Pictures: Six Nations Saturday in Edinburgh

The Six Nations Championship is back and once again Murrayfield Stadium will be the home venue for Scotland home matches – this year hosting three games against Italy, Ireland and Wales. The first of these matches took place on Saturday 1st February 2025 and as ever that sees Edinburgh Trams run more regular services to get the sell out crowds to the venue, which conveniently has its very own tramstop. Crich give more details on Lottery Heritage Fund cash

During the summer of 2024 the Crich Tramway Village were awarded £83,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Whilst we are used to funding such as these being for a big restoration project or something related to a new exhibition, this cash has a different purpose as it is to be used for a project called “Foundations First” which will help the museum plan for the future.

Severe Supertram disruption after Police incident

South Yorkshire Supertram services have been severely disrupted following a Police incident at a block of flats in the city centre. Police were called to the Gateway building on Broad Street near to Park Square at around 1900 on Monday 10th February and with a large cordon in place tram services have been amended during the ongoing incident.

The annual Heritage Railway Awards took place at a ceremony in Newcastle on the night of Saturday 8th February and it was a night of celebration for the Crich Tramway Village as London County Council 1 won the Diesel and Electric Locomotion category.
