In Pictures: West Midlands Metro 57 receives ads for National Trust

A couple of weeks ago KFC came back with a new advert on the West Midlands Metro and now we have another returning advertiser from 2024 as 57 has received a new wrap for the National Trust’s Blossom Watch campaign. The vinyls were affixed during Friday 21st March 2025 and the tram was used for the first time in this condition the following day.

Next set of Metrolink works to get underway

There will be more service changes for Manchester Metrolink as from Tuesday 25th March as the next set of major track renewal gets underway. The location of the work this time will be between Market Street and High Street/Church Street and will mean no trams can run via 1CC with Market Street and Shudehill tramstops closed. The works will continue until Tuesday 23rd April.

In Pictures: Sheffield mural shows Roberts Car

Trams in Sheffield is hardly news, after all the Supertram system has been in operation since 1994 and 30 years before then we had the extensive Corporation tram system. But its not often that the two systems mix (except for when horse car 15 returned to the city in 1995 and was displayed at Cathedral) – but that has changed with a new mural recently appearing alongside the modern tram network.

Metrolink 3013 damaged after being hit by car

Manchester Metrolink’s M5000 3013 spent an evening away from the depot after it was hit by a car on Droylsden Road on the route to Ashton-under-Lyne. The accident happened at around 2115 on Friday 14th March and led to the service on that line being suspended for the remainder of the evening.

Removal of most funding for Wirral Transport Museum confirmed

It has been confirmed that Wirral Council are to redistribute funding between projects – this includes the removal of at least £3 million which had previously been allocated to the renovation of the Wirral Transport Museum. The decision to change development projects to support in their area came in a behind closed doors meeting, although the results were soon leaked by a local Green Councillor.

Payment methods change to CityWide 7-Day and SY Connect 7-Day tickets on-board trams

From Sunday 23rd March passengers will no longer be able to make payments by card on-board South Yorkshire Supertram services for the CityWide 7-Day and SY Connect 7-Day tickets because of concerns over misuse and fraud.

In Pictures: NET 205 loses its e-on adverts and starts to get a new wrap

Nottingham Express Transit has gone a little less red after the advertising vinyls for e-on were removed from 205. They are set to be replaced by a new wrap for Sky Broadband although the tram has already been pressed into service with the advert seemingly half applied!

And now 555 003 enters service on the Tyne and Wear Metro!

Its all go on the Tyne and Wear Metro at the moment with trains going for scrap and entering service (almost) in equal measures and now it has been confirmed that the sixth of the new trains has carried passengers for the first time.

In Pictures: Lowestoft 14’s restoration continues to progress

Lowestoft 14, the only local tram in the collection at the East Anglia Transport Museum, has been a long-term restoration project with it being worked on when time allows by the dedicated band of volunteers at the museum. Moved from the main tram depot to the West depot last year 14 has been out of sight of visitors since but it certainly isn’t a case of out of sight, out of mind – far from it!

2025 Manx Electric Railway service starts

The Manx Electric Railway has become the latest tramway to get their 2025 operating seasons underway with the first timetabled workings taking place on Tuesday 18th March. This is the start of its 132nd year of operation and the sun paid a visit to the Isle of Man to mark the beginning of yet another season.

Old Metrocar to be donated to Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service

Whilst the scrappings of stored Metrocars has started to increase in recent weeks there is set to be another survivor as it has been confirmed that the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service will be receiving one of the withdrawn fleet for training at their base in Washington.

In Pictures: Soccer Aid returns to Manchester – as does a wrap on a tram!

Soccer Aid will take place at Old Trafford again this year (it seems to alternate between being in Greater Manchester and London) with the charity match in aid of UNICEF scheduled for 15th June 2025. The big launch of the forthcoming match took place earlier in March with advertising all round Manchester to promote it and now Manchester Metrolink 3031 is joining in by becoming a mobile billboard.

Crich get things underway for 2025

Spring is approaching and that can only mean one thing – and we’re not talking about leaves on the trees and longer days! It’s the start of another heritage tram season at various tramway across the British Isles. Whilst the Seaton Tramway started their season in time for the February half-term they have been ploughing a lone furrow but were joined by the Crich Tramway Village who opened for the first time in 2025 on Saturday 16th March.
