Anyone wanting to do work on or near the Edinburgh Trams system will be charged extra from Monday 31st March as the Authority to Work permit will increase in price for the first time since 2023.
To ensure that work on or near the tramway is carried out safely, it is necessary for authorisation to be obtained from Edinburgh Trams to agree a safe system of work. Applications and permission is all given online and since the PERMIT+ web based system was introduced in 2023, 2284 permits have been issued.
The online system allows the tram systems engineering team to closely monitor the work being undertaken and that all safety standards are being met.
Iain McLeod, Edinburgh Trams’ Authority to Work Manager, said: “Authority to Work permits allow our team to successfully manage risk assessments and works across the tram network, and are absolutely vital to ensure we can continue to uphold safety standards. These fee uplifts include an inflation increase from 2023 and rising operational costs across the business.”
Requests for an Authority to Work permit should be made at least 21 days before works are planned so that there is sufficient time is available to coordinate the necessary third party permissions. The PERMIT+ system allows the Edinburgh Trams team to review applications faster and more efficiently than previously.
