Next set of Metrolink works to get underway

There will be more service changes for Manchester Metrolink as from Tuesday 25th March as the next set of major track renewal gets underway. The location of the work this time will be between Market Street and High Street/Church Street and will mean no trams can run via 1CC with Market Street and Shudehill tramstops closed. The works will continue until Tuesday 23rd April.

During the works all services from Altrincham will run to Bury (and vice versa) whilst those from The Trafford Centre will be extended to run to Etihad Campus (the longest journey this route has experienced since opening in March 2020). All other routes which normally go via Market Street will be diverted via 2CC.

The pattern of tram services will be as follows:

Monday to Saturday

  • Bury-Altrincham via Exchange Square
  • Bury-Altrincham via Exchange Square (peak service)
  • Eccles-Ashton via MediaCityUK
  • Rochdale Town Centre-East Didsbury via Exchange Square
  • Shaw & Crompton-East Didsbury via Exchange Square (peak service)
  • Manchester Airport-Victoria
  • The Trafford Centre-Etihad Campus

Sunday

  • Bury-Altrincham via Exchange Square
  • Eccles-Ashton via MediaCityUK
  • Rochdale Town Centre-East Didsbury via Exchange Square
  • Manchester Airport-Victoria
  • The Trafford Centre-Etihad Campus

Metrolink ticket holders are advised if they wish to travel across the city centre they can interchange at St Peter’s Square of use the Free Bus services. When the Free Bus doesn’t operate there will be a replacement bus service running. Metrolink tickets will not be valid on any numbered Bee Network bus services.

Ian Davies, TfGM’s Network Director for Metrolink, commented: “Metrolink is the country’s biggest light rail system, with thousands of journeys being made on it ever day of the week – so it’s critically important we make sure it remains a safe, reliable and accessible way to get around Greater Manchester well into the future.

“We will be doing everything we can to minimise disruption for passengers, and I would encourage people to plan ahead and check our website or the Bee Network app for the latest travel information before setting off.

“Don’t forget to make use of the Free Bus services, which are fully accessible and passengers can ‘hop’ on and off around the city centre.”

This work is part of a £147 million package to maintain, upgrade and improve the network up until 2027. Already this year work has been completed on the Eccles line and at York Street in the city centre. Further works will take place later in 2025 at Portland Street, Aytoun Street and Piccadilly Gardens amongst other locations.
