Southampton 11 reunited with its truck

Ahead of this year’s Solent Sky Tram Event (21st and 22nd June 2025), Southampton 11 is back on is very own truck and track for the first time in over 75 years! The truck was taken away in January but returned to Southampton after restoration during May to allow the reunion to take place.

Southampton 11 has been a long-term restoration project with volunteers from the Southampton Tram Project have worked on the only remaining dome-roofed car from the city’s tramway since the very late 1970s. After withdrawal in 1949 the tram had been used as a summer house before rescue in 1979 which is when the gradual restoration got underway.

Good progress was made and this increased further from 2020 when the tram (as well as fellow Southampton car 38 along with Lisbon 715) was moved to the Solent Sky Museum where the Southampton Tram Group have their own permanent building.

The truck was removed and sent for restoration in January and after work was completed by a contractor it was returned to Solent Sky in May 2025. The tram was lifted to allow the truck to be placed under it and it has now sitting on track once again.

It is thought that it is over 75 years since this last happened (and in that time Southampton 45 at Crich is probably the only tram from the city which has done that) making this a massive milestone in the restoration project.

The public will be able to see this excellent progress in the tram’s restoration story during the Solent Sky Tram Event on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd June 2025. Details of how to get the Solent Sky Museum are available at https://www.solentsky.org/.
