Have you ever sat on a tram and thought “I could probably run faster than this and get there quicker”? If so a new planned event in Edinburgh on 22nd June could be just up your street – “Race the Tram! 2025”.
The idea of the event is that you run from the city centre to Edinburgh Park Central tramstop, racing the tram as you do to see whether you can truly get there any quicker! Two routes are being offered – either from St Andrew Square (approximately 5.5 miles with 71 minutes to complete the challenge) or Newhaven (approximately 7.5 miles and 50 minutes to complete the challenge).
The day will start at Edinburgh Park Central at 0800 on Sunday 22Nd June with participants boarding a tram. They will then get off at either St Andrew Square or Newhaven and then race the tram back to Edinburgh Park Central! The tram itself will run from Edinburgh Park Central all the way to Newhaven and will then turn there as normal before heading back to Edinburgh Park Central and beyond (hence why those choosing St Andrew Square as their preferred stop have a longer time for a shorter distance than those from Newhaven).
The event will raise funds for the charity Meningitis Now, chosen in memory of Alexis Rose Glynn, who died of the disease in 2011. Her father, Alan Glynn, is a regular Blast Running participant and marshal and established the Alexis Rose Fitness Family in her honour.
Final approval of the event from the Council is still awaited although organisers, Blast Running, are confident that this will be given.
Catriona Bruce, from Blast Running, said: “Join us for a brand new event in Edinburgh’s running scene. Navigate the city. Outsmart the tram. Can you get back before it does? But don’t follow the tram line – you are orienteering your way around town to beat it back to where you got on!”
