New LRSSB podcast looks at success of women in light rail

The latest edition of the LRSSB podcast celebrates the contribution of women to the ongoing success of light rail to help mark International Women’s Day which took place on Saturday 8th March.

The new edition celebrates increasing the diversity within what is traditionally a male dominated industry. Some of the leading female voices in the sector join Carly Swift, LRSSB Marketing and Digital Media Manager, in the episode which is available for download now at https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/lrssb.

Sophie Allison (West Midlands Metro Managing Director), Sarah Singh (Edinburgh Trams Head of Service Delivery) and Sarah Higgins (Transport for Wales Operations Director) offer their views on what can be done to attract more women into light rail. They also share their own experiences of managing the work/life balance, and discuss the challenges faced by colleagues when it comes to raising a family while enjoying success in an intense work environment.

They also explore many of the opportunities for women on the nation’s tramways, from front-line roles to jobs requiring specialist skills, but agree that more needs to be done to boost both recruitment and retention.
