We have another edition of “Stop by Stop” as our journey on Edinburgh Trams continues. We now come to Balgreen.
When the tram departs from Murrayfield Stadium we travel across an impressive viaduct as the tram continues onto Balgreen. We cross the Water of Leith as we approach the stop and drop down back to street level and have the Edinburgh to Glasgow main line for company on our left. Balgreen was once home to Balgreen Halt railway station which was opened in 1934 but only remained in use until 1968. The station was on the Corstorphine Branch of the LNER which is now a cycle route..
When we arrive at the stop we find everything you need for your journey on the two platforms either side of the tracks. There are shelters, ticket machines, passenger information, lighting, seating and CCTV. The overhead here is supported by centre poles. The aforementioned Edinburgh to Glasgow railway line is just separated from us by secure fencing.

The Edinburgh to Glasgow railway is seen here to the left of this shot as tram 273 leaves the stop heading for the Airport. This view also allows us to take a closer look at a card validator.

And then we capture a photo of 253 as it pulls into the stop with a Newhaven bound service. This is taken from the opposite platform and shows many of the available facilities at the stop including shelters, ticket machines and the all important passenger information display. Both of these images were taken on 3rd July 2023. (Both Photographs by Gareth Prior)
