Stop by Stop Edinburgh Trams: Through the City Centre and beyond – Haymarket

Its another edition of “Stop by Stop” as on we go with a journey in Edinburgh. We now reach Haymarket as the tramway leaves its on street running.

Last time we saw our tram arrive at West End and we now depart from that stop with the tramway now running along Atholl Place and then Clifton Terrace. Plenty of interactions with other vehicles in this section and the roads are lined with various commercial properties as well as hotels and the like. We also pass the Heart of Midlothian Memorial Clock and then approach the stop adjacent to Haymarket Railway Station.

The stop at Haymarket sees the return of platforms either side of the tracks instead of an island platform. With there being two platforms they both have shelters, passenger information displays, ticket machines and the various other items we have come to expect. The Newhaven bound platform is directly by the road and provides excellent interchange with bus services. Meanwhile, the Airport bound platform is on the same side as the railway station which is just a short walk away.

This first photo shows 269 as it arrives at the stop with a service to Newhaven. The tram is just arriving to a busy platform and the signage on the shelter makes it clear to visitors that this is the side to get into the city centre. On the near platform there is still a bit of a wait for the next service as a gentleman uses the validator at the end of the platform.

And then we look towards the city as 256 pulls into the stop on its way to the Airport. It’s a much less crowded scene now and we can see in more detail just what the stop has to offer. Both photos are from 1st July 2023. (Both Photographs by Gareth Prior)
