There will be major changes for services on the South Yorkshire Supertram network later this month and stretching into June as a programme of rail replacement gets underway. Whilst this first phase of work will only see changes to the tram service between Saturday 25th May and Sunday 2nd June (coinciding with the May half term holidays) its also been confirmed that there will be more works to come over the summer.
The works will mean that no trams will run through the city centre with Fitzalan Square, Castle Square, Cathedral, City Hall and West Street all closed (in addition Netherthorpe Road will be closed for stop refurbishment). Rail replacement will be undertaken between Fitzalan Square and Park Square roundabout which will prevent trams from accessing most of the city centre from the depot at Nunnery Square. Further work is taking place at Cathedral which also prevents this from being used for trams to reverse.
The highlights of the revised service in operation (if disruption due to engineering works can have highlights!) are the return of a Green route which will operate from Halfway direct to Meadowhall, some Purple route trams going to Meadowhall again (although not via Cathedral with the majority of trams on this route being diverted to terminate at Cricket Inn Road), the chance to regularly use the section of Park Square Junction direct from Sheffield Station to Hyde Park and the regular use of platform C at Sheffield Station (this is the old platform to the left of the station entrance where Tram-Train services will depart from).
Between Saturday 25th May and Sunday 2nd June the following services will run:
- Blue – Malin Bridge to University of Sheffield every 20 minutes (Netherthorpe Road stop closed). All trams will use platform B at University of Sheffield.
- Yellow – Middlewood to University of Sheffield every 20 minutes (Netherthorpe Road stop closed). All trams will use platform B at University of Sheffield.
- Purple – Herdings Park to Cricket Inn Road (some journeys will be extended to Meadowhall early morning and evening). Hourly Monday to Saturday, half hourly Sunday.
- Tram-Train – Rotherham Parkgate to Sheffield Station (this service will terminate at platform B at Sheffield Station to allow passengers to alight but boarding will be at platform C; this is not the usual platforms and is located to the left of the station entrance and not the right hand side as the usual platforms are)
- Green – Halfway to Meadowhall up to every 12 minutes
- TR1 Tram Replacement Bus Service – Granville Street to the city centre and back up to every 6 minutes
