After four weeks with no trams able to run to the Newhaven terminus on the Edinburgh Trams network they have resumed. The necessary repair works and associated testing were completed on Friday 22nd December allowing the full service to run again all the way between the Airport and Newhaven.
It was Friday 24th November that trams were suspended between Ocean Terminal and Newhaven after the discovery of a fault with the overhead line equipment. Once it was established what the issue was, a new part had to be ordered and with this readied it was possible for the repair works to commence earlier this week.
A spokesman from Edinburgh Trams said: “Our engineers have worked as quickly as possible to carry out repairs on this section of the line, as well as the necessary safety checks before services could resume. Trams will now continue to serve all stops between the airport and Newhaven from every seven minutes, and we would like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding while these works were being carried out.”
With trams now running again the Lothian Buses ticket acceptance is no longer in place and it also means the split service over Hogmanay which will see trams running from Newhaven to Picardy Place will be able to operate as planned.
https://edinburghtrams.com/news/services-newhaven-resume-following-overhead-line-works states that work was completed and services resumed to Newhaven from Thursday afternoon (press release timelined 1637 that day), rather than from Friday.
Edinburgh Trams has kindly confirmed to me in an email that, while repairs were indeed completed on Thursday 21st December at 16.47, passenger services to Newhaven resumed from start of service Friday 23 December 2023. Their ‘X’ account also shows that that were only running to Ocean Terminal at 19.00 on the Thursday too.
