Around the World in Trams: Port de Soller 1

The December stop in our worldwide tour of trams is Port de Soller on Majorca as we take a look at some of the trams in service on this heritage tramway which first started to run in 1913.

The Port de Soller tramway is operated by Ferrocarril de Soller S.A. and first ran on 4th October 1913. The line is just over 3 miles long (4.8km) and is mainly on a single track although does have passing loops along its length. Operating on a 3 foot gauge it runs between Soller Railway Station and Port de Soller with service provided between 0700 and 0000.

The fleet of the tramway consists of a mixture of original motors built in 1913, trailer of the same vintage and a selection of other vehicles acquired in more recent years, including a number of motors from Lisbon which are being converted for use on the Port de Soller tramway.

This first photo from the tramways shows 1 at Mar y sol which is the terminus of the line from Soller Railway Station. 1 was built in 1913 for the opening of the line by Carde y Escoriaza in Zaragova, Spain and remains in use today, 110 years later.
