Ashton line delays after car drives into tram underpass on Ashton line

Tram services between Piccadilly and Ashton-under-Lyne were suspended for around two hours on Saturday 29th October after a car took a wrong turn and drove into an underpass on the line before getting stuck and requiring rescue.

The car managed to drive into the underpass just by the New Islington tramstop (the first stop on the Ashton line when departing from Piccadilly) after taking a wrong turn. As is often the case when a car ends up on the tram tracks it then became stuck and realising their error the driver was unable to move their vehicle.

In the end a breakdown truck had to be called to take the car away. This led to delays on the line for around two hours. Trams continued to run from Ashton to Clayton Hall during this time.
