Metro performance falls as old style poster returns!

Performance on the Tyne and Wear Metro has fallen again in the latest four week period and after a couple of years where there have been no reasons for service problems the poster has returned to its old format where it gives more detail than just what they are doing to make the system clean and safe.

Between 6th February and 5th March 2022 79% of trains were reported as arriving on time (within two minutes later or 30 seconds earlier than timetabled). In comparison the previous four weeks had seen 82% on time whilst the same four weeks in 2021 saw a figure up at 89%.

There were two major issues which caused problems in this period, both down to the storm which were experienced during February. In one instance there was a service suspension between North Shields and Tynemouth due to a storm damaged wall with Nexus staff making the area safe after placing scaffolding. Then, also during February, the storms damaged overhead power lines and trackside vegetation which saw staff working overnight in order to undertake repairs and to remove many fallen and damaged trees.

The poster also gives passenger satisfaction levels in November 2021 with an overall rating given of 7.5 out of 10. Several other questions were also asked of 2200 Metro passengers at the time with station equipment coming in at 6.9, information 7.2, cleanliness 7.1, security 6.7, ticketing 6.4 and staff availability 5.2.
