When the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) took control back of the Supertram system they promised investment into the infrastructure, and as well as various trackworks this includes work on the stops across the network. One such stop is Meadowhall South/Tinsley which has recently seen work take place to enhance and make it a more pleasant area to wait for the tram.
Meadowhall South is one of the busiest stops on the network (being an interchange stop between the Yellow and Tram-Train routes, as well as providing access to the Meadowhall shopping centre), and the surrounding area had become heavily overgrown. The Supertram facilities team have already planted 450 spring-flowering bulbs and sown wildflower seeds across the banks and soil areas.
Although the results won’t fully show until early spring, customers and colleagues can expect to see colourful plants throughout much of the year once everything is established. Painting and general tidy-up work has also taken place, with just s few remaining finishing touches to come.
Mark Blackwell, Facilities and Cleaning Manager at Supertram, said: “We want our tram stops to feel welcoming and cared for. A bit of colour and greenery makes a real difference to the experience customers have every day. This project is about improving the environment now, but also building a more attractive and sustainable network for the future.”
Similar improvements took place at Manor Top two years ago, which received excellent feedback, including photos from customers who enjoyed new planting. The team hopes to bring the same approach to other stops, including Crystal Peaks.
