The big changeover of the fleet of trains on the Tyne and Wear Metro has continued over the past few days as we’ve seen two more of the original Metrocars go on a final journey to the scrap merchants.
The latest pair to make the journey to J Denham Metals Ltd in Bishop Auckland have been 4028 and 4046.
4046 was the first of these to depart with it being moved by a couple of its still operational classmates from Gosforth to Howdon on Monday 24th November 2025. From Howdon it was then collected by lorry and taken off to the scrap merchants where it will be scrapped.
Then Tuesday 25th November 2025 saw 4028 make the exact same journey, with 4035 and 4075 doing the deed of moving the withdrawn unit on Metro metals for the very last time.
These are the 45th and 46th of the original 90 Metrocars to go for scrap – so we seen more than half of the fleet head for scrapping. And when you add in 4001 (preservation) and 4019 (Tyne and Wear Fire Service) that means there are now only 42 Metrocars which remain on the Tyne and Wear Metro network, although not all are serviceable and others will be expected to make the scrap move in the near future.
