In Pictures: Trams to Newhaven works at Ocean Terminal

Last time we featured the construction works on the Trams to Newhaven project in Edinburgh we took a look at what had been happening at the city centre end of the line so this time it makes sense to head along Leith Walk and to Ocean Terminal to see what has been happening there in recent weeks.

The works around Ocean Terminal have been ongoing since the Spring of 2020 with various different worksites having got underway since to do the usual utility diversions, preparation of the ground for track laying and then the eventual track laying along with platform installation too. According to the revised October 2021 plan all the works around Ocean Terminal should be completed by Spring 2022.

The road is almost complete along Ocean Drive between Rennie’s Isle and Ocean Terminal and is being used by pedestrians and traffic. A short section (in the distance ) near to Ocean Terminal is yet to be opened to traffic in either direction.

Looking in the other direction along Ocean Drive towards Rennie’s Isle, both lanes of the road are complete. The wooden boxes in the centre reservation are temporary covers for the traction pole bases.

Away from the extension but a new development nonetheless is the installation of new validators on the platforms. There will be two new ones for each old one and as well as being able to validate existing smart cards they will also allow passengers to pay using a single touch of their credit or debit card for a single journey. If the same card is used several times during the day a single journey charge will be added each time with a cap of a day ticket charge no matter how many additional journeys are made. This will bring the tram into line with Lothian Buses which uses the same system on all its city buses. (All Photographs by John Hampton)
