Picture in Time: Blackpool Balloon 709

Its time to head into the archives again as we are off to Blackpool in the 1980s.

The main feature of this week’s image is another of the Balloon Cars, no. 709. We see the tram here at Pleasure Beach as it awaits departure on 30th May 1984 with a healthy load of passengers on board. The Inspector is chatting to the driver as the tram gets ready to head off to Bispham with windscreen fully open to allow the conversation to continue. 709 is still in the 1970s style of fleet livery complete with Corporation crests and a between deck advert for Coral Island.

709 has remained in Blackpool throughout its history but was rebuilt to the flat front millennium condition and has also received the widened centre entrances. It remains at Rigby Road Depot, stored, still in an expired advert for the Sealife Centre.
