A spectacular end to the season at Crich

Another busy operating season at Crich Tramway Village has now come to an end. Although 2016 may not have had quite as much as excitement as some previous years with no ‘new’ trams joining the running fleet, it has still been a busy year with 20 different electric passenger trams running. The last public open day was Sunday 30th October, however on Saturday 5th November a special open day was held for invited guests which saw an enhanced tram service operating for the final time this year.

Tramlink Stadler 2565 enters service

London Tramlink has welcomed Stadler Variobahn 2565 into service with the tram being used for the first time on Friday 4th November. 2565 has become one of the fastest of the Stadler built trams to enter service with it only being delivered on 9th October and testing having commenced on Tuesday 1st November. With testing a success 2565 carried its first fare paying passengers during the afternoon on 4th November when it was allocated to route 2 between Beckenham Junction and West Croydon.

Proposed service pattern revealed for Metrolink post-2CC opening

As construction work starts to come towards a conclusion on Manchester Metrolink’s Second City Crossing (2CC) Transport for Greater Manchester have released their proposals for the service pattern which will operate from early 2017 once the new line opens. The new 2CC will initially see trams running between Rochdale Town Centre and East Didsbury with the Manchester Airport service eventually extended to Victoria (from early 2017 it is planned this service will be run to Deansgate-Castlefield instead of its current terminus of Cornbrook).

Douglas Bay Horse Tramway ends a successful season

Sunday 30th October saw the end of a successful season for the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway – a season which it seemed for a time at the start of the year we may never have seen. With the Department of Infrastructure through Isle of Man Railways operating the tramway for the first time 2016 has seen increased passenger loadings and an improved timetable hopefully cementing the position of the tramway as part of the heritage railway offering on the Isle of Man.

Black Country Living Museum looks towards the future

Dudley’s Black Country Living Museum – home to the UK’s only 3”6’ on street tramway – have announced ambitious plans for a major expansion of the museum which would include an extension to the tramway to form a circular route around the site. The plans are all part of a 10 year vision which would seek to create a world class visitor attraction welcoming 500,000 visitors per year by 2022.

Metrolink boost capacity in lead up to Christmas

With just 50 days until Christmas and people apparently starting to think about their shopping for the festive period Manchester Metrolink are set to boost capacity on certain routes with more double trams operating from Monday 7th November until Friday 23rd December.

In Pictures: Metrolink 3022 receives advert livery

The latest M5000 to receive a vinyl wrap advert livery is 3022 which has received a black based livery for Michael Kors, and yes there is extensive use of contravision. New trams enter service

London Tramlink and Manchester Metrolink have seen new trams enter service over the past few days. For Tramlink Stadler 2564 carried its first passengers on Friday 21st October whilst up in Manchester the more historic event of the last of the M5000s, in the form of 3120, entering service on Sunday 23rd October.

Bus hits tram in Dublin

Eight people were injured when a tour bus hit a Luas tram in Dublin City Centre on Friday 28th October. The circumstances surrounding the collision are not yet known but three investigations are now reported to be underway to find out what happened.

In Pictures: Branch Line Society visit Crich

On Sunday 24th October the Branch Line Society visited the Crich Tramway Village with the aim of covering as much track as possible – which included some very rare moves not normally enjoyed by passengers when visiting the museum. Leeds 399 was the tram chosen for this special working.

Birkenhead to commemorate ending of Liverpool tram routes

The main heritage tram season may be rapidly approaching across the UK (with a few exceptions of course) but that doesn’t mean nothing is happening with another event set to take place at the Birkenhead Heritage Tramway. On Saturday 5th November the tramway will be commemorating the 60th anniversary of the ending of Liverpool tram routes 19 and 44 with a tram service in operation alongside other events.

Manchester Metrolink service changes: 29th & 30th October

Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th October will see more changes to Manchester Metrolink services with the Bury line completely closed and services on the Rochdale line only running as far as Monsall. Victoria, Shudehill and Market Street stops will also be closed throughout the weekend.

Improved timetable for Midland Metro

A slightly improved weekday service will be introduced on Midland Metro from Monday 31st October. The main highlight of the new timetable will be an additional service for Wolverhampton St George’s from Wednesbury Parkway at 0708 returning to Grand Central at 0724. There will also be a few minor timing amendments of other services with the remainder of the timetabling remaining as it is now. Youth court held to tackle fare-dodging in Manchester

16 youths from the Oldham area have been fined a total of £2,629.20 at a special youth court event recently held at Bury Magistrates Court. All the youths were taken to court after they failed to pay a standard fare charge, which is issued to anyone caught travelling on the network without a valid ticket.

Positive reaction to 272 incident

Following the report submitted in regard of the previously reported fire on board Blackpool Towing car 272 last month, it is pleasing to confirm that the Railway Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) have decided not to conduct any further investigation as they are satisfied that the incident was only a minor one. However, Blackpool Transport and the Blackpool Heritage Trust have nonetheless decided to take a pro-active response to this by assessing some of the other trams in the heritage fleet.

Glasgow 22 returns to service

As an unexpected late season bonus, Glasgow 22 has made a surprise return to use at the Crich Tramway Village. The tram has received a heavy overhaul and was undergoing testing for the last few weeks, ready for an expected return to service next year. However, with the tram performing well on test, it has been released to traffic earlier than anticipated and recorded it first day in service on Tuesday 25th October for the Starlight Spectacular event.
