In Pictures: New fire alarm sees a quick shunt at Crich

Crich is closed, so nothing is happening right? Wrong! As well as the ongoing maintenance taking place – including in the workshop where Blackpool Standard 40 has now been lifted for an overhaul – Monday 14th February saw a small shunt take place to allow for a new fire alarm system to be installed in Depots V and VI. The following photos from Peter Whiteley show images of some of the trams which were moved, including some which aren’t often seen out in the open.

In Pictures: Another tram returns to service on the West Midlands Metro as 42 receives an advert

The hard work returning trams to service on the West Midlands Metro is continuing with Monday 14th February seeing a further Urbos3 entering service for the first time since the entire fleet was withdrawn back in November. This time around its 31 – still complete with its Cyril Regis MBE name and special vinyls – which has run for the first time in several months. Meanwhile, 42 has become the first of the Urbos 100 trams to receive an advert with it being noted carrying ads for Nourished Personalised gummy vitamins.

Tram output announced for Blackpool’s February Vintage Weekend

The first tram event of 2022 is nearly upon us – as is the second major storm of the week! – and Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours have now announced their planned tram output which should see eight different trams in service over the weekend – including the return to service of Centenary 648 for the first time since 2020. With the Vintage Weekend kicking off on the evening of Friday 18th February with a special tour using the Western Train, the two days of the weekend will then see a six tram hop-on, hop-off timetable running alongside further Western Train Evening Tours and also bus tours and depot tours. In Pictures: Back to almost identical twins in Sheffield

Both of the trams on the Stagecoach Supertram network which advertise Pretty Little Thing.com are once again looking the same (almost!) after 118 followed 111 in receiving a very slightly revised advert for the company who have been advertising on the tram since April 2018.

Overhead line damage leads to severe Metrolink disruption

There were big problems for Manchester Metrolink on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th February after a major overhead line problem in the Trafford area led to the complete suspension of services on the Altrincham and East Didsbury lines with others seeing severely restricted services running. The issue was first reported around 1830 on the Tuesday evening with a limited service able to start again from around 1500 the following day.

In Pictures: Trams return to the full circuit at Beamish!

Since the tram service resumed at Beamish in September 2021 trams have been unable to run all the way around the tramway circuit with the section passing the Events Field between Foulbridge and the Town closed requiring maintenance works. That is until now as after a short period of testing trams have started running on the full circuit again – for the first time in very nearly two years!

In Pictures: Update from the city end of the Trams to Newhaven project

Whilst a lot of our attention recently in Edinburgh has been taken by the closure of the York Place tramstop there has been no let-up in construction works on the full extension to Newhaven. In this update we head out onto the new line – due to open in 2023 – to see some of that recent progress at the city centre end of the line. We’ll have another update soon further along the line.

Southampton 57 makes the move to Romsey

We reported just before Christmas of a significant development for Southampton 57 with its ownership being transferred to the Solent Sky Museum as it was set to be moved to further storage ahead of decisions made on its future. This move took place in mid-January with the tram being transferred the relatively short distance between Hampshire County Council’s Museums base at Chilcomb near Winchester to Solent Sky’s off-site storage in Romsey.

In Pictures: Edinburgh Trams’ new temporary terminus at West End

Unless you haven’t been concentrating recently you will be well aware that its been all change on Edinburgh Trams following the permanent closure of the city centre terminus at York Place to allow more work to take place on the Trams to Newhaven extension. This meant that as from Thursday 10th February all trams from Edinburgh Airport have been terminating at West End All and will continue to do so until April when they will start to run to St Andrew Square until the extension to Newhaven opens in 2023. Metrolink’s Eccles line to close for rail replacement works

The Eccles line is to be closed on several occasions in 2022 to allow for rail replacement works to take place. The first closure will see no trams on the line for eight days during the February Half Term holidays – 19th to 27th February – before further partial closures will follow during the Easter and Summer school holidays.

In Pictures: West Midlands Metro returns to Library for the first time in over 200 days!

Saturday 12th February 2022 – mark that date in your diaries as that was the date that passenger services between Bull Street and Library in Birmingham City Centre finally started running again. There were 202 days between the last day of service on 25th July and the first day of the resumption on 12th February with trackworks and then tram shortages causing the suspension of services.
