In Pictures: 42 inaugurates public services to Edgbaston Village

It may be around eight months later than scheduled but trams are now finally running to Edgbaston Village after the second phase of the West Midlands Metro Birmingham Westside extension officially opened on Sunday 17th July 2022. The first tram to run with passengers on board between Library and Edgbaston Village was Urbos100 42 with nine other trams also in use to operate the planned 12 minute frequency service on this first day of service.

Chesterfield 7 latest tram to return to service at Crich for 2022

As we start to approach the main summer season and with the UK currently in the middle of a heatwave more fair weather trams are being commissioned for service at the Crich Tramway Village. The latest tram is open balcony car Chesterfield 7 which was used for the first time in 2022 on Saturday 16th July.

In Pictures: Lionel Messi duplicates in Edinburgh!

We reported last week on the news that Hard Rock Café were advertising on an Edinburgh Tram for the first time with a design promoting their new Messi Burger on 262. And now there are two Lionel Messi’s in the city as an identical advert is also on 277 – does this finally put an end to the debate as to whether Messi or Ronaldo is the greatest ever considered the Argentinian superstar has two trams with his image on and Ronaldo has none?!

In Pictures: A look at Glasgow’s Riverside Museum

Its not a museum which we cover a huge amount on British Trams Online – with the same trams having been on display for some time in the same positions – but we do today as we tae a look at what is on offer at Glasgow’s Riverside Museum. Home to the largest single collection of Glasgow tramcars anywhere the museum packs an awful lot into its building as in addition to the trams there are vehicles of many different types including from the Glasgow Subway, railways and buses, in fact you name it they probably have one of them on display! Trevor Hall paid a visit back in 2021 we see the trams on display in this article.

Trams to Newhaven schedule slips slightly – but still on track for a Spring 2023 opening

Work on some sections of the Trams to Newhaven project, which will see Edinburgh Trams extended along Leith Walk and on to Newhaven, has been slightly delayed but despite this it is still expected to be ready to open in spring 2023 as planned – and all main construction works are still due to be finished by the end of 2022.

Tyne and Wear Metro brightened by new community art work

Three Tyne and Wear Metro stations in South Tyneside have had an extra splash of colour added with new artwork having been put on display to help celebrate the 40th anniversary of the network. Hebburn, Chichester and Bede stations have all received the artwork which has been produced through a project delivered by The Cultural Spring, working with County Durham artist Laura Brenchley and a mix of local community groups.

Let services to Edgbaston Village commence!

It may have seemed like a long-time coming but Sunday 17th July will see the much delayed West Midlands Metro extension to Edgbaston Village open. And, of course, if trams are running to Edgbaston Village that also has to mean that the previously opened section – but not served by trams since the resumption of services in June – from Bull Street to Library will also see services once more.

Bury line to close for a week in August

There will be more engineering works on Manchester Metrolink during August with no trams running through to Bury between Saturday 13th and Friday 19th August. The work will take place in two phases and will see both new rails laid and a new power sub-station installed.

In Pictures: Birmingham Eastside work comes to a temporary standstill

With the Commonwealth Games fast approaching (starting 28th July) a lot of the work being undertaken by the Midland Metro Alliance to extend the West Midlands Metro network is being suspended. This is most noticeable in Birmingham City Centre where the contractors have even gone as far as laying temporary tarmac where track will be laid on the Eastside extension.

In Pictures: East Anglia Transport Museum celebrates 40 years of the woodland tramway

The recent London Event at the East Anglia Transport Museum – 70 years since the last tram and 60 years since the last trolleybus in the capital – also saw another more local anniversary celebrated during the events which took place over the weekend of 9th and 10th July. While earlier in the year there was a celebration for the 50th anniversary of the museum itself, 11th July marked 40 years since the tramway was extended into the woods.

RAIB to release safety digest after door trapping incident on Metrolink

The RAIB have confirmed that they will be releasing a safety digest in the coming weeks after an incident on Manchester Metrolink which saw a passenger’s bag get trapped in the doors of a tram leading to them being dragged along the platform for a short distance.

In Pictures: Enter the open top tram at Crich!

Sunday 10th July saw the much anticipated entry into service of an open top tram at the Crich Tramway Village with Blackpool Boat 236 being used as part of a three car service at the Roaring 20s event. This was the first open top tram to be used at Crich in 2022 and comes just over a week after the resumption of services following the replacement of corroded overhead poles in the depot yard.
