Edinburgh Trams break records for passenger numbers

On its ninth birthday (trams started running on 31st May 2014) Edinburgh Trams have announced that they have just enjoyed their busiest ever days thanks to Harry Styles! And all this comes before the network expands by almost 3 miles with the Trams to Newhaven extension due to open on 7th June giving more opportunities for travel by tram in the city.

Power problems cause suspension of Blackpool Tramway

Bank Holiday Monday in Blackpool. Its going to be busy, right? Especially with the sun shining after what seems to have been a very long period with grey overcast clouds. And when its busy in Blackpool you want the tramway to move people along the Prom. Unfortunately, on Monday 29th May this wasn’t possible to start the day as power supply problems meant there were no trams at all running to start the day – covering both the modern Flexity2 trams and the planned Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours Enhanced Weekend.

Blackpool Tramway to introduce new safety systems

In the aftermath of the tragic accident on London Tramlink at Sandilands in November 2016 which saw seven people die after a tram came off the tracks when overspeeding around a curve, the RAIB made several recommendations to improve safety on UK tramways. This included tram systems being required to fit systems to prevent overspeeding and the Blackpool Tramway have been working alongside Alstom to fit new equipment to the trams for the rolling out of not only this but also obstacle detection.

Metrolink award contract for Tram Safety Improvement Programme

All 147 of Manchester Metrolink’s trams are to be fitted with enhanced safety systems as part of the RAIB recommendations following the Sandilands accident on London Tramlink. Transport for Greater Manchester have awarded a contract to DB ESG to deliver the Tram Safety Improvement Programme.

MER services return to Ramsey Plaza

All Manx Electric Railway services to Ramsey are once again serving the Ramsey Plaza terminus after the completion of trackwork across Parsonage Road. This is the first time trams have been able to regularly run to the main station terminus since 2016 (although the terminus has been used at times during TT week) and is certainly reason to be cheerful!

Metrolink staff vote to go on strike over pay offer

There will be severe disruption on the Manchester Metrolink network this June after members of Unite the Union voted to take strike action over what they are describing as a “woeful” pay offer. 95% of their members who took part in the ballot (on an 84% turnout) voted to take the action and as expected Unite have chosen to go on strike over the weekend of Parklife (10th/11th June).

Anyone attending Pride events in Birmingham on 27th and 28th May will be able to get discounted travel on the West Midlands Metro. All zone fares will be reduced by 20% when purchased through the Birmingham Pride website.

In Pictures: A walk along the Birmingham Eastside extension

Of the three West Midlands Metro extensions currently being built the last set to open in full will be the Birmingham Eastside line with trams not likely to reach Digbeth until 2026 because of delays in the HS2 construction at Curzon Street – tram work cannot take place until this is completed. Despite that far away date work is still underway where it can be and on Monday 15th May 2023, Ken Jones took a walk along the route to see what recent progress has been made.

More extra trams in Edinburgh – this time for Harry Styles

Edinburgh Trams will again be running additional services for a major event at Murrayfield Stadium this weekend. Trams will be running up to every three minutes before Harry Styles’ concerts at the Stadium on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th May with regular trams also in operation following the conclusion of the concerts.
