Still Standing! Overhead poles in Edinburgh

We’ve been in Edinburgh several times before in “Still Standing!” but we haven’t previously featured the overhead pole we take a look at today in the last of the series.

That overhead pole is located in Dryden Street in Leith which was part of the “back entrance” to Shrubhill Works. The depot has been opened in 1871 and originally housed horse trams until 1907 and was also the home of cable trams between 1899-1922. It was finally converted to overhead electric trams in 1922 and its from that date that its thought the overhead pole we feature was originally erected. Despite the fact that the depot was closed along with Edinburgh Corporation Tramways in 1956 the pole has remained.

The familiar sight of an ornate overhead pole can’t be mistaken in this view of the pole in Dryden Street.

Another view of the pole, still in place and seemingly with no purpose any more!

In the same vicinity the former offices of the tram depot are currently being converted to residential use. This photo taken on the same day as that of the poles shows the ongoing work. (All Photographs by Stuart Little, 15th April 2023)
