Edinburgh Trams overhead line works rearranged

It has been announced that the planned connection of the overhead wires between the current line to York Place and the future extension to Newhaven on the Edinburgh Trams network are to be rearranged. Originally due to take place at the end of January they will now be taking place during mid-February.

Stagecoach Supertram Engineering Works: Sunday 29th January

Essential engineering works on Sunday 29th January will see an early curtailment of services on Stagecoach Supertram’s Blue and Purple routes between Sheffield Station and Halfway/Herdings Park. Services will run as normal until 2100 after which no trams will run on these sections until the start of service the following day.

In Pictures: 17 back at Wednesbury and on driver training!

The first of the Urbos3 trams which departed the West Midlands Metro depot at Wednesbury for repairs in Dudley has returned – and its already been commissioned for use again with it being noted out on driver training! The tram in question is the first of the class, 17, which had had been absent from Metro metals since October 2022.

Gosforth Depot works to see Metro line closures

As work continues on the £70 million redevelopment of Gosforth Depot on the Tyne and Wear Metro there will be two weekend line closures in January and February to facilitate further works. Stadler will be replacing track, overhead lines and signals at the eastern end of the depot site during this work to prepare it for the arrival of the first new trains, which are due to be delivered from this winter.

In Pictures: First new advert of 2023 in Edinburgh

We’re still in that part of the year when we can claim “firsts of 2023” and that includes a first new advert of the year for Edinburgh Trams. And it’s the lowest numbered tram which gets this accolade as 251 is now carrying ads for Hello Fresh.

Dinosaurs invade Seaton again!

After a sell out event in 2022 the Dinosaur Adventure Show will be returning to the Seaton Tramway this February! Featuring Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist Chris Roberts, known as Ranger Chris, this event will see dinosaurs roaming around the crowd during four 90 minute performances at Seaton Station.

Major investment to Beamish Tramway infrastructure

The tramway at Beamish is currently undergoing a programme of upgrade work to ensure that it remains safe and operational in a year that will see it celebrate its 50th anniversary. Beamish have recently appointed a new Transport Infrastructure Manager and he had developed a programme of work which will take place over this winter and spring period.

Haymarket Sidings becomes a temporary terminus in Edinburgh again

Tuesday 17th January again saw the flexibility of the Edinburgh Trams system when, due to a signalling and traffic lights fault at Haymarket, services were temporarily turned at Haymarket Sidings loop. And why did this show flexibility? There isn’t a full stop located there with just a slightly raised platform provided but despite that it has been used on a few occasions to allow passengers to get as close to onward bus travel as possible.

In Pictures: 48 breakdown on West Midlands Metro

It may be the newest tram to be running in the UK but that doesn’t mean that its immune to breaking down – West Midlands Metro Urbos100 48 came to a halt just after departing Soho Benson Road on Saturday 14th January leading to disruption on the network and the fairly rare sight of another tram being called upon to tow it back to depot.

Progress for FTT trams

The first couple of weeks of 2023 has already seen some progress for two of the Fylde Transport Trust’s trams. The two in question are Twin Motor Car 281 and Coronation 304 with the former’s repaint almost completed in St Helens whilst for the popular Coronation Car there has been a significant delivery ahead of its eventual return to service.

Seaton Tramway get ready for another packed year

They may have only last run on 2nd January but its very nearly for another season to get underway at the Seaton Tramway with daily running due to take place during the February Half Term holidays before its weekends only until the last week of March – and then there are daily trams all the way until the end of October!

First track installed in Lower Bull Street

We brought you photos of this last week but the Midland Metro Alliance have now released an update on construction work for the Birmingham Eastside extension which has confirmed that the first sections of track have now been installed on Lower Bull Street in the city centre.

Greater Manchester TravelSafe Partnership to step-up enforcement across the region

With a number of knife-related incidents on public transport – with Metrolink particularly affected – across Greater Manchester the region’s TravelSafe Partnership have sought to reassure the travelling public that they are stepping up enforcement. Although knife crime is not unique to public transport it remains a top priority for the TSP and Greater Manchester Police with plans for increased activity at hotspots across the public transport network.

Funding to help kick-start very light rail revolution in the West Midlands

The West Midlands Combined Authority have agreed to release the first instalment of what could eventually amount to £72 million worth of funding towards the Coventry Very Light Rail (CVLR) system. Much of the funding will go towards building a real world demonstration track in Coventry City Centre and to help develop a business case for a fully operational system.
