The scrappings of the Metrocars, which have been running on the Tyne and Wear Metro for over 40 years let’s not forget – appears to be showing no signs of slowing down as not content with sending six for scrap over an eight day period a seventh also headed that way.
4003 is the unit which has been sent away with it being taken off Metro property on Thursday 12th June 2025. This is another set which has not been long stored at the depot with it having been reported in service as recently as April 2025. But it wasn’t going to hang around for long with the space need for the continued arrival of the new Stadler built trains from Switzerland.
Once again 4003 was taken by rail from Gosforth to Howdon with two of its operational sisters top and tailing it along the line. Once at Howdon it was collected by a lorry and then moved to J Denham Metals at Shildon where the final scrapping would take place.
This is the 26th of the fleet which have now moved away to be scrapped, so over a quarter of the original fleet have now been scrapped.
