Out and About 2025: South Yorkshire Supertram – Hillsborough

In this article we feature a photo of a tram taken during 2025 and its off to the South Yorkshire Supertram system we go!

As trams depart from Hillsborough tramstop towards the city centre they pass not only the bus station but also a retail development known as Hillsborough Barracks. This complex takes it name from the one-time British Army Barracks which were built in 1848 and would be in use until 1930. The complex covered around 22 acres and once featured a mess, quarters for officers, a chapel, the Garrison Commander’s quarters (a five bedroom property no less), a two-storey hospital, quarters for the rank and file, and stables for horses. It was sold in the early 1930s, and then in the 1980s enjoyed a complete redevelopment, although parts of the historic structures remained in place as part of this. In this photo we see 116 – advert for Park and Ride – having just departed from Hillsborough with a Yellow route service to Meadowhall. (Photograph by Stuart Cooke, 4th April 2025)
