Long-serving Metro team member recognsied at Light Rail Awards

Gavin Lloyd, Technical Engineer at West Midlands Metro, was recognised at the recent Global Light Rail Awards in the Judges Special Award category. He has worked at West Midlands Metro for 18 years and in 2015 was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease but in spite of that has continued to work at Wednesbury Depot.

He was recognised by the judges for his courage and contribution to the light rail industry.

Speaking after being given the award at Wednesbury, Gavin said: “To say I was surprised is an understatement, and I would like to thank everyone involved with the nomination. I had no idea anything was happening at the depot, I just thought I was meeting up with a supplier to talk about wiring looms, but when the roller shutter door was raised and I saw members of my family, past and present colleagues all stood there, I really didn’t know what to think!”

Upon being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2015 he was given an estimated life expectancy of up to two and a half years but now almost a decade later he is continuing to work on the trams.

He added: “Hopefully, I can continue doing this for many years to come with the support from the wider Metro team.  Disability or illness shouldn’t mean you have to give up and give in, provided you’re able to do so.”

Sophie Allison, Managing Director at West Midlands Metro, said: “Gavin continues to make a valuable contribution to the organisation, and long may it continue. He really is a remarkable and inspiring member of the team who thoroughly deserves this recognition from colleagues across the wider light rail sector. Although Gavin was unable to join us at the awards ceremony, he was well represented, and it was a great honour to witness the standing ovation which was dedicated to his journey.”
