Picture in Time: Johannesburg 60

In this “Picture in Time” we are again featuring a tram in action at Crich.

Featured in this photo is Johannesburg 60 which is just heading up the line with another service. The back open balcony on the top deck is occupied and the chance are that the front balcony is too, with these always being popular with visitors to get a bit of fresh air whilst not being fully exposed to the elements. Southampton 45 is again featuring in the background of the photo.

Johannesburg 60 was built in 1905 and was finally withdrawn from service in 1960. At this point it was acquired by the Tramway Museum Society and would arrive in the UK in 1964. Restored to operational condition over the next two years (although before this it was to play a starring role in a television series based on a DH Lawrence story when it briefly became Notts & Derby 14) and would enter service at Crich in 1966. It would remain in service for most years following that until it was taken out of service in 2012.
