Friday 7th June saw Edinburgh Trams celebrate another anniversary – this time exactly a year since public service started operating on the 3 mile line to Newhaven. Over the past 12 months it has provided a huge boost to the city for both locals and tourists alike.
Since the line opened the number of people using the tram has more than doubled and in the first six months over seven million trips were recorded.
Managing Director of Edinburgh Trams, Lea Harrison, said: “We’re delighted to see the Trams to Newhaven Project has already proved its worth, unlocking a wealth of opportunities for communities along the new route. Thanks to the hard work and commitment of the entire team here at Edinburgh Trams, and our partners the line has delivered a real boost to Edinburgh’s plan to become a net-zero city. More than ever, the expanded network delivers a world-class, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective service for millions living, working or visiting the city.”
One venue which has benefited from the tram extension is the Edinburgh Playhouse, their Theatre Director, Gordon Millar, said: “The tram route extension has been a wonderful and welcome addition for our audiences travelling from across the city to see our shows. The Picardy Place stop being directly opposite the theatre has meant that making your way to your favourite musicals, comedy, gigs and more has never been easier.”
