After being re-elected at the recent South Yorkshire Combined Authority Mayoral election, Oliver Coppard has now set out his vision for the future which will connect people across the region through an integrated public transport network that puts people at its centre.
Announced on the day after his re-election was confirmed, Oliver Coppard gave his commitment to rolling out an integrated public transport system across South Yorkshire connecting bus, Supertram and active travel by 2028.
Specifically on Supertram there are plans to set out potential extension of the Supertram network next year. They are looking at possible opportunities for expanding the network including the use of Tram-Trains between Sheffield and Stocksbridge and along the Barrow Hill Line between Chesterfield and Sheffield. In addition they are also investigating additional connections across the city (such as to local hospitals) to see what is possible.
The plans for extensions are due to set out in 2025 before they are put out for public consultation ahead of the proposals going to central Government for approval and funding.
Its also been confirmed that all trams will be refurbished by March 2027 with a new fleet due to be introduced from 2032 – subject to government funding being made available.
The results of the survey which was launched when Supertram came under public control again at the end of March will also be used to inform other possible improvements to the service. This aimed to get people’s views on a wide range of subjects including personal safety, cleanliness, condition and maintenance of seating, tram stop information, bike facilities and being able to take dogs onto the trams.
