West Midlands Metro fares to increase from 1st January 2024

The price of travel on the West Midlands Metro is set to rise from 1st January 2024 as the company introduce their first fares increase since 2022. Fares will be increasing by an average of 5% which remains below the rate of inflation and will allow a continued investment in the service with the promise of a higher frequency timetable to come.

The latest time fares increased was in June 2022 and fares were frozen in 2023 to help Metro passengers during the cost of living crisis. West Midlands Metro do remain committed to offering affordable travel to the thousands of people who rely on it every day but the increase is necessary to help cover costs.

Michael Reading-Skilton, Head of Commercial at West Midlands Metro, said: “While other transport operators have significantly increased fares in recent years, we reduced some of ours, and implemented a ‘fares freeze in 2023. This has made a real difference to our customers while boosting the popularity of the tram network.

“As we gear up for further expansion customers will see an increase in service frequency and the number of trams in the fleet. This fare review supports our continued commitment to provide and deliver a reliable and sustainable service that offers one of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel in the region.”

Amongst the new fares as from 1st January 2024 will be:

  • Adult Zone 1 Day ticket (peak) – £3.20 (was £3.00)
  • Adult Zones 1-4 Day ticket (peak) – £6.70 (was £6.50)
  • Adult Zone 1 Day ticker (off peak) – £3.00 (was £2.80)
  • Adult Zones 1-4 Day ticket (off peak) – £5.00 (no change)
