More than two million extra journeys made on Metro thanks to Pop Blue smartcards

Young people have made more than 2.3 million journeys on the Tyne and Wear Metro using the Pop Blue smartcard, which gives them travel for just £1. The excellent value for money smartcard has helped to stimulate more journeys on the network whilst also helping the young of the region to save money.

First introduced in 2018, the Pop Blue was first available of people aged between 16 and 18. Then earlier this year it was extended to include those aged up to 21. Over 27,000 young people have now taken out a Pop Blue card and there are nearly 130,000 journeys taking place each month using one of the cards. 85% of all 16-18 year olds use a Pop Blue card when travelling on the Metro.

Huw Lewis, Nexus’ Customer Services Director, said: “Young people continue to enjoy excellent value and flexibility with a Pop Blue smartcard, which has generated an extra 2.3 million trips on Metro since it was introduced.

“Pop Blue lets young people take a single journey on Metro for £1 and as much as they want all day for £2.20. It’s easy to use, customers don’t have to commit to any regular travel, it’s contactless and better value than using ticket machines.

“Pop Blue is part of our family of great value smart cards and discounts for young people aged 21 and under on Metro. You can find the right card for you or your children and start saving right away – and don’t forget that children aged 11 and under travel free with a fare paying adult all day, every day.”

The Pop Blue card allows anyone aged 21 and under to travel for just £1 for a single trip. The card is free but has to be purchased with a minimum £5 balance.
