Around the World in Trams: Timisoara 3546

For the next couple of editions of “Around the World in Trams” we are heading to eastern Europe as we feature the tramway in the Romanian city Timisoara.

Timisoara is the capital city of Timmis Country in Western Romania and lies on the Bega River. It has a population of 300,000 with several universities and a large student population of around 40,000. Horse trams were originally introduced in 1889 with the network starting to be electrified from 1899. The network continues to be extended to this day and operates on a standard gauge.

The tram we feature today is no. 3546 which was built in 1977 for Bremen in Germany. After it become surplus to requirements there it headed to Romania in and ran for four years in normal service. Then in 2011 it was transferred to become a museum vehicle and remains in use for that purpose today.

The tram is a single-ended vehicle with this end having advertising vinyls covering it.
