In Pictures: Surprise! Blackpool 619 back in service at Heaton Park

This article was updated 18th December 2022 with the addition of photos.

This is a story we didn’t expect to be reporting on before the end of 2022 – the return to service of Blackpool Replica Vanguard 619 at the Heaton Park Tramway. It has been used during the Lightopia event after its overhaul reached a stage where it could operate again, although there do remain some works to be completed next year.

It has been over five years since 619 last ran with it being withdrawn from service for overhaul during 2017. In that time attention in the Workshops at Heaton Park has been dominated by other projects such as Stockport 5 but work has continued in the background on the tram to bring it back into use and give the tramway another open tram for those warm, balmy summer days in Manchester.

619 retains its red and white livery as originally applied at Heaton Park following its move from Blackpool and for the occasion of its return it has also received strings of lights along the roof to add the general Lightopia theme.

Further work will be required on the tram and this is expected to start again in January. This will include final finishing works including on the livery lining and also the reinstallation of advert boards.

Whilst the Heaton Park Tramway closed in September for the season it is currently operating on selected dates during Lightopia which is once again taking place in the Park this festive season.

619 sits at Lakeside on its first day back in service – 9th December 2022.

10th December 2022. Snow on the ground but that that’s no reason not to use an open sided tram is it?! The trolley of 619 is turned at Middleton Road Gates in this daytime view showing the results of the overhaul.
