The Number 20: Gateshead 5

Today’s edition of “The Number 20” features a tram which is no longer numbered 20 but used to be! Its Gateshead 5.

Tram: Gateshead 5 (ex-Grimsby & Immingham 20)

Built: 1927

Qualification for series: Numbered 20 from 1951 when it was transferred to the Grimsby & Immingham Railway

Two photos as part of today’s article as we see the tram as 20 and 5. In this shot we see it not long after arrival at Crich in 1965 when it remained as Grimsby & Immingham 20. It was being used as a source of compressed air for a pneumatic drill to break through the rocks just below the surface of the ground. Unfortunately, the drill used the air quicker than the compressor on the tram could generate it! (Photograph by Keith Chadbourne)

Over the next eight years the tram was gradually restored to its Gateshead condition as no. 5 and would run on and off until 2007 when it was taken out of service once again. It now requires another visit to the workshop before it can be considered for a return to service but is seen here on 8th June 2013 when on static display on the depot fan.
