More Metrolink improvement works in the early part of 2022

There will be major works taking place on the Manchester Metrolink network in the early part of 2022 with line closures being seen at various points in the first three months of the year. We have already seen the start of these works with closures through Victoria but in the coming months there will be other areas of work including no services on the Eccles line for over a week in February and major changes for services through Manchester City Centre for a week during March.

The works at Victoria have been taking place over the first three days of January 2022 and these will continue on Sunday 9th, Sunday 16th, Sunday 30th January and Sunday 6th February. In addition to these works Sunday 16th will also see no trams running via Piccadilly. Saturday 19th to Sunday 27th February sees no trams on the Eccles line with works then moving into Manchester City Centre during March including the closure of the line through Deansgate-Castlefield on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th March and then from Sunday 20th to Sunday 27th March the Ashton line will be closed in its entirety and all services running between Victoria and St Peter’s Square will be diverted via 2CC and Exchange Square.

A full summary of forthcoming service changes follows:

Sunday 9th January

No trams running via Victoria with the following service changes:

  • Bury line services will terminate at Abraham Moss
  • Rochdale & Oldham line services will terminate at Monsall
  • East Didsbury line services will terminate at Exchange Square
  • Manchester Airport line services will terminate at Firswood

Replacement buses will run on affected lines

Sunday 16th January

No trams will be able to run via Victoria or Piccadilly with the following service changes:

  • No trams on the Ashton-under-Lyne line
  • Manchester Airport line services will terminate at Firswood
  • Altrincham line services will terminate at Piccadilly Gardens
  • Bury line services will terminate at Abraham Moss
  • East Didsbury line services will terminate at Exchange Square
  • Eccles line services will terminate at Piccadilly Gardens
  • Rochdale & Oldham line services will terminate at Monsall
  • Trafford Park line services will terminate at Cornbrook

Replacement buses will run on affected lines

Sunday 23rd January

No trams will run on the entirety of the Altrincham line with replacement buses in operation

Sunday 30th January

No trams running via Victoria with the following service changes:

  • Bury line services will terminate at Abraham Moss
  • Rochdale & Oldham line services will terminate at Monsall
  • East Didsbury line services will terminate at Exchange Square
  • Manchester Airport line services will terminate at Firswood

Replacement buses will run on affected lines

Sunday 6th February

No trams running via Victoria with the following service changes:

  • Bury line services will terminate at Abraham Moss
  • Rochdale & Oldham line services will terminate at Monsall
  • East Didsbury line services will terminate at Exchange Square
  • Manchester Airport line services will terminate at Firswood

Replacement buses will run on affected lines

Saturday 19th to Sunday 27th February

No trams will run on the entirety of the Eccles line with trams from Ashton-under-Lyne being diverted to run through to Bury. Replacement buses will run on the Eccles line.

Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th March

No trams will be able to run via Deansgate-Castlefield with the following service changes in place:

  • Ashton-under-Lyne line services will run to Bury
  • Bury line services will run to Ashton-under-Lyne
  • Peak-time Bury line services will run as far as Piccadilly
  • Altrincham line services will run every 10 minutes to Trafford Bar
  • Oldham & Rochdale line services will run to Exchange Square
  • Peak-time Shaw & Crompton services will run to Exchange SQAURE
  • Eccles line services will run to Cornbrook
  • East Didsbury line services will run every 10 minutes to Trafford Bar
  • Manchester Airport line service will run every 10 minutes to Firswood
  • Trafford Park line services will run every 10 minutes to Wharfside

There will be replacement buses from Piccadilly to Cornbrook, Piccadilly to Old Trafford, Victoria to Chorlton and Wharfside to Deansgate

Sunday 20th to Sunday 27th March

Trams will be unable to run through Manchester City Centre resulting in the following service changes:

  • No trams on the Ashton-under-Lyne service
  • Altrincham line services will run to Bury via 2CC
  • Bury line services will run to Altrincham via 2CC
  • Trafford Park line services will run to Deansgate-Castlefield
  • Eccles line services will run to Deansgate-Castlefield
  • Manchester Airport line services will run to Victoria as normal but via 2CC

As well as the Ashton-under-Lyne line being closed the stops at Shudehill, Market Street, Piccadilly Gardens and Piccadilly will be closed to trams.

There will be replacement buses from Victoria to Piccadilly and Ashton-under-Lyne to Cornbrook.
