Around the World in Trams: San Francisco 1058 collision

We move away from Europe for the next few editions of “Around the World in Trams” as we head to San Francisco – and start off with views showing the aftermath of a collision between a PCC and a trolleybus.

As part of the historic fleet of streetcars which run services in San Francisco there are a large number of iconic PCC cars, with some of these being built for transport operator Muni in the first place while others have followed on later as they sought to increase the size of the fleet in more recent years. One thing they all share though is the sleek design dating from the 1940s while today many of them are in “tribute” liveries to other transport operators around the United States of America.

But despite their historic nature they aren’t immune to prangs as we see in these photos taken on 20th September 2006. This is no. 1058 which was originally built for the Philadelphia Transportation Company in 1948 before being acquired by Muni in 1992. Restored, 1058 entered service in San Francisco in 1995 receiving the Chicago Transit Authority livery which was kept until 2010.

Here we see 1058 having come into contact with the rear of trolleybus 5592 with some damage visible on the end dash of the streetcar. Also note the rather ironic advert on the trolleybus “theymissyou.com” – not in this case they don’t!
