Christmas Shutdown for Trams to Newhaven project

The Trams to Newhaven project has now shutdown for Christmas with no more work scheduled to take place again until Monday 4th January (when a site inspection will take place before work resumes in earnest the next day). Over the past few months excellent progress has been seen on the construction which has included the first stretches of track laid at both Ocean Terminal and on Leith Walk.

In preparation for this shutdown all main works finished on the evening of Wednesday 16th December which allowed the following two days to be used to make the worksites safe and ensure all security was put in place. As part of this work all open excavations have been backfilled for both health and safety reasons and to protect assets.

The entry and exit dates at all sites have been locked by a coded padlock with this code being shared with the emergency services if needed during the two week shutdown.

When work resumes in the new year work will commence on Ocean Drive (Rennie’s Isle to Ocean Terminal) with this section due to be finished by the autumn of 2021. Work will also begin on the area outside Stevedore Place from 18th January 2021 which will utility diversion works and the laying of track, ducting and drainage. This section is due to be finished by Summer 2021. The previously mentioned issue over the trees will also continue to be looked at next year with the project team discussing this with concerned local residents.

As well as these new sites work is due to continue at Newhaven, Ocean Drive and Constitution Street and on Leith Walk.
