Railgrinding in Edinburgh

A start has been made on railgrinding the tracks from Haymarket to Picardy Place in Edinburgh city centre as further signs of progress on returning trams to the city are seen. The grinding work commenced at Haymarket on 5 May and is then scheduled to start on Princes Street on 7 May after the morning peak period.

Both tracks between Haymarket and Picardy Place will be treated by the rail mounted grinder which will move along the track at walking speed to grind down the rail surface collecting debris as it goes. In order to ensure that all debris is collected a road sweeper will follow. Whilst the work goes on the lane being dealt with will be closed to all traffic and a vehicle will follow the grinder to show when this is.

It is expected that the process will take nine days to complete and although some disruption is inevitable it is hoped this is kept to a minimum with all work being undertaken outside of peak periods (0930-1600).
