Schoolchildren artwork on display at new Metro depot

New artwork designed by year 6 pupils at Percy Main Primary School has been put on display at the new Tyne and Wear Metro depot in Howdon as part of a safety campaign. The artwork has been put on a banner at the gates of the new depot, currently being constructed to allow some trains to be stabled and receive overnight maintenance during the redevelopment of the depot at Gosforth.

Nexus has been working alongside Percy Main Primary School to promote safety due to Howdon Depot’s proximity to the school and local homes. The temporary depot – on a former landfill site in Howdon – is currently under construction and is due to open this summer when the overnight stabling, cleaning and preparation of up to ten trains will take place. Nexus will transition into the new depot up to 2024 by which time all of the new trains will have been delivered.

Rebecca Ditchburn, Community Relations Officer at Nexus, said: “The work we are doing with schools is vital to get that safety message across. An art project way is a great way of doing that and it gives the kids a chance to see their work put on display. It was important to engage with the local community in order to promote safety ahead of the new Metro depot opening at Howdon.”

Tom Bates, Year 6 teacher at Percy Main Primary School, added: “This project was a fantastic opportunity to increase awareness and understanding of safety when using Metro but also a great way to explore the history of such a valuable local resource. Seeing their artwork presented like this in the local community is sure to build self-esteem and a sense of pride. What more could you ask for during such a difficult period of our lives.”
