Works resume of Birmingham Westside extension

Work on extending the West Midlands Metro from Library to Hagley Road in Edgbaston has resumed following a two week suspension. The decision had initially been taken on 23rd March that in light of government advice on social distancing that all work would be suspended until further notice but after further advice it had now been decided that work can resume.

In a statement on the Midland Metro Alliance website it is stated: “On 31 March 2020 further advice and clarification was provided by the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy along with updated Site Operating Procedures being received from the Construction Leadership Council on 2 April 2020. Following this, and with further careful consideration, works on the Edgbaston phase of the Birmingham Westside Metro extension have now resumed in a reduced capacity in line with industry safety procedures. An abundance of care continues to be taken to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our team and that government guidelines are met on our site at all times, with much of the work currently taking place in heavy plant allowing for extended social distancing of staff members. This is an ever-changing situation and we will continue to follow government advice accordingly. Construction works on additional Metro extension projects will resume as soon as it is deemed safe to do so.”
