31 involved in collision on Bilston Road

There was major disruption on West Midlands Metro after a car collided with Urbos3 31 on Bilston Road – causing the front of the tram to be derailed and the car to overturn. The collision happened at approximately 0820 on Monday 19th August between the stops at The Royal and Wolverhampton St George’s.

Four people on the tram – including the driver – were treated for injuries at the scene but did not require hospital treatment. The tram driver was treated for minor injuries with two further passengers treated for shock and one other passenger received non-serious injuries. In total there were 29 people reported as being on board the tram. The sole occupant of the car had to be cut free from her vehicle – which had overturned – and was treated for her injuries on the scene before being transferred to hospital in a stable condition with her injuries said to not be serious.

Because of this incident trams were not able to run through to Wolverhampton St George’s. Until shortly before 1100 the service was running from Grand Central to Priestfield with it possible after then to extend journeys through to The Royal.

The damage suffered by 31 seems fairly major on the end which came into contact with the car and the tram is likely to be out for a while to allow repairs to take place.
