Altrincham line suspended after van ploughs onto Metrolink

One man suffered serious injuries with another man also injured after a van ploughed through a brick wall close to the Brooklands stop early in the hours of Monday 12th November. Fortunately it happened before Metrolink services were running for the day but it did mean that the service could not start immediately whilst the van was removed and damage to the overhead was repaired.

From the start of service Metrolink services were unable to run between Altrincham and Old Trafford with a service only running between Old Trafford and Piccadilly. Extra services were put on to Sale Water Park for the Park and Ride site there to aid passengers wishing to travel into the city centre with ticket acceptance also in place on Northern rail services and local buses.

The van was finally removed at 0730 and after the completion of repairs to the overhead and track – and the running of a test tram – a full service resumed from 0900, just at the end of the morning rush hour.

It is unclear what caused the van to go through the wall, with the incident taking place at around 0220. Both occupants of the van were taken to hospital for treatment, one was described as having serious injuries.
