Metro journeys to Newcastle Airport hit all time high

More passengers than ever are travelling by Tyne and Wear Metro to Newcastle Airport according to new figures released by Nexus. Almost 1 million journeys were made in the year up to March 2018 with officials stating this is down to the increase in destinations from the Airport as well as the northeast itself becoming a more popular destination for visitors.

Huw Lewis, Director of Customer Services, said: “We’re seeing record numbers of passengers using Metro services to get to and from Newcastle Airport, which is a key regional gateway that continues to grow. In the year ending March 2018 there were close to a million journeys. The number of people using Metro to get to the airport has been increasing for six consecutive years as we offer customers more flexible ways of paying for their travel. Metro is part of everyday life in Tyne and Wear. We’re proud to be able to provide such a vital link to our region’s biggest airport.”

Five direct trains run every hour to the Airport from Newcastle and Sunderland City Centres with the first train each day being at 0500 with a 0540 return from the Airport. Tyne and Wear Metro has been running to the Airport since 1991.
